installing freebsd6.1

Due to some freaky thought, lately I started feeling Ubuntu is getting too boring these days.. everything works just like that out of the box. So I downloaded FreeBSD 6.1 CDs the day before and tried to install it today. I was thinking for sometime if in this upcoming version my wifi works out of the box then maybe i'll migrate to FreeBSD..

So there i burnt the three iso files on cds and rebooted from first cd. Everything is fine till i come to partitioning.. err, what was the device id of primary partition i kept for freebsd? Somehow i managed to figure out what it is..

Installation, hardware configuration goes smoothly.. but the most challenging part of installation is yet to come

.. I select packages i want to be installed(All Packages and their dependencies).. Insert CD-1 to continue... » i change cds » after sometime, Insert CD-2 to continue... » i change cds » after sometime, Insert CD-1 to continue.. ».. [repeat that 20+ times] » dependency failed so not installing package pango-foo.bar, libfoo, gtkbar.. blah... » arrrgghh.. » I press hard reboot for 10 seconds...

Ok, so freebsd installation was fun.. maybe i want to wait for 6.2 release..

Ah now don't scare me yaar. I am looking forward to install gentoo and FreeBSD next month. I will do net install for both so I hope I don't have to face this trouble.
Why don't you try net install? You have lots of bandwidth at your disposal na.

Mehul, the place where i have awesome bandwidth does not give me enough time to mess with os installation, and the place where i have nothing good to do has feeble internet connection

freebsd 6.1's installation gave me this nagging problem of changing the disks till eternity. maybe i/you should try not selecting All Packages for installation.

My problem previously has been that. I select net install and something or other has always gone wrong in middle of the install with my net connection. Hoping for the best next time. I remember just selecting required packages once, it took me 6 hrs to sort out. Later to my horror, FreeBSD my net was down and my effort went down the drain.

So the installtion was completed irrespective of the packages that could not be installed?

And mehul, you can ask Mrugesh from the mailing list to help you with Gentoo atleast

nah, after getting so much bugged by changing cds, (and that too more than 20 times. i was worried about my laptop's tiny dvdrom's health..) i pressed the reset button..

in the next attempt i managed to get freebsd6.1 installed, but guess what? the keyboard of laptop doesnt work(sometimes) and ofcourse wifi doesnt work.

anurag.. u should ve selected minimal first and configured the install later when u've booted with /sbin/setup. This methoud works great. You would have a quick installation then u can get into pkg management and have fun with deps.

Thats why it is always bad to select [ALL] some people like it, but its will be hard when you recompile everything from ports.

oh well, even if i do minimal install, what is the gaurantee that it will not ask me to switch CDs more than 20 times (which is why i rebooted )

I installed Pc-BSD yesterday and now I am unable to even boot from my hard disk. Looks like yesterday was a really bad day. Sab saath mein hi kharab hona tha.
Anyways, I guess I won't be repairing it for few days. I feel, now FreeBSD hi better rahega PC-BSD se.
But, lately PC-BSD's growing quite well. Do you think it can make it big?
